21 Jan    Reference Interval Changes February 2010
  Reference intervals (often called normal ranges or reference ranges) should be specific to a patient’s age and sex and specific to the method used by that laboratory. Launceston Pathology has derived optimal reference intervals for all major biochemistry tests and over the next few months we plan to introduce more detailed reference intervals.

23 Mar    Drug Screens
  The majority of our drug screen requests are for legal requirements or preemployment screens. Urine, collected under supervision, is the required sample.
23 Mar    Artificially Elevated Potassium Results
  It is not uncommon for us to get a high Potassium result, but on re-bleeding, it is within the normal range. Our laboratories have panic levels for certain analytes and for Potassium it is > 6.2 mmol/l. Above this level we are obliged to phone the ward/surgery/doctor to inform them.
23 Mar    Calculated Free Testosterone
  For most clinical purposes total testosterone measurements are satisfactory. However, where the level of binding protein (SHBG) may be unusually high or low e.g. obesity then calculating the free testosterone from total testosterone and SHBG may be helpful.

  Currently our testing profile has consisted of IgG gliadin antibodies, IgA gliadin antibodies and a single tissue transglutaminase IgA antbody test. These two IgG and IgA gliadin tests have now been replaced by a single IgA test using a new deaminated gliadin.

01 Sep    New Blood Transfusion Guidelines
  The Australian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service wish to ensure that blood in the form of packed red cells is only used when necessary and that unnecessary cross matching which results in a relatively high wastage rate is reduced to a minimum.
