As of July 1st 2006 the following Medicare Benefits Schedule conditions apply for HPV Digene testing which may be requested to detect the presence of high risk HPV:
The patient has received excisional or ablative treatment for high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions [HSIL] of the cervix within the last two years, or
The patient, within the last two years, has had a positive HPV test after excisional or ablative treatment for HSIL of the cervix.
Is already undergoing annual cytological review for the follow up of a previously treated HSIL
[maximum] of two of this item in a 24 month period.
Thirteen subtypes of HPV have been identified as “high risk” as they have been shown to be present in 99.7% of cervical cancers. The HPV Digene test detects these thirteen high risk types. The result is reported as either negative or positive for high risk HPV. A specimen can be collected in a variety of ways. Our preferred method is to use the Digene Cervical sampler, with sample placed in the specific transport tube provided. These cervical samplers can be obtained free of charge from our laboratory together with collection instructions. Note: due to transport requirements other collection media [such as Thinprep] are unsuitable for this test. In order to ensure your eligible patients receive the rebate, please indicate on the request form that the patient meets the criteria outlined above. In other countries testing for high grade HPV types has been used in the management of atypical or equivocal smears, management of low grade cervical lesions and management of equivocal histology. These indications are not rebatable in Australia at this time. This test is not suitable for screening males for the presence of HPV. For those who fulfill the Medicare Benefits Schedule requirements and are not bulk billed, there will be a gap of $38.25 if the account is paid within 30 days. For patients who do not meet the criteria to qualify for Medicare rebate the cost will be $45.00 if the account is paid within 30 days. If you have any questions regarding HPV Digene testing, please feel free to ring Dr Shaun Donovan in our Cytology Department on 62 371233 or the pathologists at Launceston Pathology on 63 343636.
Yours sincerely
