The majority of our drug screen requests are for legal requirements or preemployment screens. Urine, collected under supervision, is the required sample. We have protocols in place which include the following:
Chain of custody form: This form is signed by the patient stating that the sample is from themselves & sealed in their presence.
The form is also signed by the staff member who has observed the collection. Entries are then made on this form to track the movements of the sample.
Three containers: The collection is usually made into one container and the collector aliquots portions into another two containers. Security tape signed by the donor & collector are put over the lids. One container is used for the initial testing at our Laboratory. The other two containers are frozen. The second container is kept in case confirmation of a positive result by the reference GCMS method is requested. The third container is kept should the patient want the sample back for an independent analysis.
Photo Identification: Drivers license or passports are required.
Frequently asked questions:
Turn around Time: Samples collected at Launceston by 4 pm Monday to Thursday are analysed the next day. Friday collections are analysed the following Monday. Should confirmation of a positive result by the reference GCMS method be required, this can take up to a week because the samples are forwarded onto Melbourne.
Cost: The test costs are approximately $55 for a screen & $65 for confirmation by GCMS.
Kits: Launceston Pathology can supply kits that contain the forms, seals, containers & instructions.
Request forms: This can be on a Pathology request form or a letter containing the necessary information including patient demographics, where results are to go to, where the bill is to go to and requestor information.
Laboratory hours: It is recommended particularly for males, to attend between 8.30 am & 5 pm (Mon – Fri), so that staff are available to supervise the collection.
Drug screens for medical reasons: The chain of custody form & security seals are not necessary, but please specify on the request that it is for medical reasons or we will be obliged to phone you.
How long do the drugs stay in the body: A very common question that has no answer as there are many variables that determine this.
What tests are performed: Cocaine, Opiates, Benzodiazepines, Cannabinoids, and Amphetamines. A creatinine level is also done to ensure the urine has not been diluted.
Ethanol is available if requested and carries an additional cost.
Problems for the Laboratory:
“I can’t go because I have just produced a sample at the doctor’s surgery.”
Please tell the patient to attend pathology when they are able to produce another urine sample.
